Leather Accessories: How to Protect Them

Leather must be protected – also using texting auxiliary chemicals – in order to last as long as possible in the most perfect conditions. This is especially true for bags, but also for belts, shoes, gloves, and other leather accessories. If we want the leather to look good over time, we must not neglect anything and never leave anything to chance. Here is a sort of vademecum for the conservation of leather:

  1. Never use leather accessories at the beach. Sand is prbably the first enemy of leather, since it deteriorates it. For this reason, leather bags and shoes must necessarily be left at home. For sure you will find other occasions to show them, but not on the beach!
  2. When leather bags and shoes are kept in wardrobes, newspaper has to be used to keep their shape. As far as bags are concerned, this is true both for those that have a soft shape as well as for rigid bags. Newspapers must be crumpled up, but not too much, in order to make volume and thus preserve the original features. You can also use a leather softener.
  3. Bags, shoes and belts must be fed with a special cream, transparent or of the same color of the leather. But remember to not put the accessories in the closet right away after that, because the cream needs to dry. Otherwise it would dirty everything it could come into contact with. Experts also use leather pigments in order to maintain the color of leather accessories.
  4. Do not use soap or various detergents to wash the leather: In order to clean spots, wipes – for example those for babies – are already a good choice. For a deeper cleaning, however, you can opt for cleansing milk using make up wadding disks.

3 Ways to Recognize a Genuine Leather Belt

The belt is not simply an accessory to sustain our trousers, but a real object of style and fashion. It is important therefore to learn how to recognize real leather belts from synthetic ones. Let’s say that the problem of having to distinguish a men’s leather belt from a synthetic one arises because of the existence of fabrics that, although very similar to real leather, have absolutely nothing to share with it.

Here are 3 ways and tests you can do to distinguish a genuine leather men’s belt from a synthetic leather one:

  • Leather belts wear out differently.

It’s just another way of saying that they last longer compared to an accessory that isn’t made of real leather, also thanks to leather softeners. With time and use only the underlay of the leather comes out, while a belt in fake leather becomes fragile and full of cracks that crumble when touched.

  • A real leather belt has an unmistakable smell.

The smell of genuine leather cannot be described, but surely if you smell it, even years later, you immediately realize whether it is a quality material or not. Fake leather will for sure not have a smell like it and it will certainly be more like naphtha. Also leather chemistry used on real leather will not make its fabolous smell fade away.

  • A genuine leather belt absorbs water.

Great attention must be taken in this case, because it depends on the leather.

In general, if you try to pour a drop of water on a genuine leather belt, you will see that after a few seconds, leather will have absorbed the water without the tissues having altered. A fake leather belt, on the other hand, does not absorb water and the drop will remain there until you have dried it. Why do you have to pay attention then? Because if the leather belt has undergone a water repellent treatment thanks to textile auxiliary chemicals, even if it is real leather, it will not absorb water anyway.

How to Clean Leather Shoes

How to clean leather shoes is a very frequent question especially for those who care a lot about their shoes and cannot wear them ruined. Leather shoes are beautiful, comfortable, but also delicate, because they are made with natural materials that require a lot of care, attention, and special leather finishing products, but at the same time can be cleaned easily and quickly. However, cleaning leather shoes is an action that always creates a slight anxiety, which is why we are going to explain how you can clean your leather shoes.

It is good to distinguish two types of cleaning: ordinary and extraordinary. The first is more frequent and you can do it at home and by yourself every time you feel the need, the second is more thorough and requires tools, professional techniques, and leather chemistry. Let’s talk about the ordinary cleaning:

  • Cleansing milk or drinking milk: Take a wad of cotton wool and pour in a drop of cleansing or drinking milk. Then rub gently on the stain and prevent the leather shoe from getting soaked. In this way, you will probably be able to remove the leather shoe.
  • Breadcrumbs: It depends on the type of stain you need to remove, but passing over a piece of breadcrumb could help eliminate it.
  • Marseille soap: Take a basin of warm water and melt some Marseille soap and dip a cloth. Pull it out, tighten it tightly to prevent it from being filled with water, and start rubbing.
  • Vinegar: According to some experts of household methods, white vinegar in small quantities, applied with a soft cloth, can remove stains.
  • Olive oli: Olive oil with a few drops of lemon juice can become an excellent polish for leather shoes to be applied with a thick cotton cloth or a sponge. Leave the product to work for a few minutes, clean, and polish with a clean cloth. In the end you can also apply a specific leather softener.

Leather Shoes: What You Need to Know

There are many things to know about leather shoes and about leather finishing products. A fundamental aspect that you definitely need to know before buying leather shoes concerns the linings. At first glance, it seems like a completely secondary thing, but it is not the case. In fact, the lining can determine, as well as the quality of the leather and the leather chemistry used, the whole quality of the shoes, therefore the success of the purchase.

Of course, the lining must be made of natural materials. Indeed, a synthetic material will make your foot sweat and give problems from the bacterial point of view, causing odors, fungi, etc. But it is not enough that the lining is made with leather, also in this case, there are top, medium, and cheap products.

The economic product par excellence is the pig leather lining. You recognize it, because you can clearly see the dot from which the hair came out. It is a rather dry material and with sweaty feet, it often gives off a characteristic – and unpleasant – smell. When you see a shoe with a pig leather lining, it is better to not take the product into consideration.

A beautiful shoe has a kid lining. It is a very light material, brilliant, which softens the leather of the whole shoe, thanks also to leather softeners. If it is of high quality and it allows a good transpiration.  Of course, like many other precious things, a beautiful shoe also requires a little care. We will talk about that in the next article.
